Petrov earned 90 caps for the national team, scoring 19 goals. He has won the League title and the League cup of both Bulgarian and Swiss championships, with CSKA Sofia and Servette Geneva, respectively. In 2006, he was voted the Bulgarian Footballer of the Year award.
