Atleti completed the comeback in the beginning of the second half, when another Balkan player, Serbian Mateja Kezman, scored the winning goal. The Bulgarian moved to the Vicente Calderon in the summer of 2005, after recording four exceptional seasons in the ranks of the German side Vfl Wolfsburg. The former Bulgarian international spent two seasons in the Spanish capital and went on to make 52 appearances, scoring 3 goals. Petrov earned 90 caps for the national team, scoring 19 goals. He was part of the squad at the 2004 European Championship in Portugal, excelling in all three games and scoring Bulgaria's only goal at the finals - a penalty against Italy in the 1:2 loss. Petrov has won the League title and the League cup of both Bulgarian and Swiss championships, with CSKA Sofia and Servette Geneva, respectively. In 2006, he was voted the Bulgarian Footballer of the Year award.
