Despite suffering a serious injury at the beginning of the season, the Bulgarian International midfielder went on to make 23 appearances, scoring 2 goals. At the end of the season, and merely a year after their unsuccessful attempt to earn promotion back to the Premier League after losing the Wembley final play-off against Southampton, The Peacocks returned to the English elite division. Gruev became only the second Bulgarian to date (after Svetoslav Todorov with Portsmouth back in 2002/2003) who won the Championship.
