Game was part of the newly created FIFA Series tournament and was played in Baku, Azerbaidjan on March 22, 2024. Bulgaria beat the Africans 1:0 thanks to a goal scored by team's captain Kiril Despodov in the 52nd minute. Ilia Gruev Jr played full 90 minutes in midfield. What makes this shirt historic is the fact that it was the first and only time to date that the Bulgarian national team wore a "golden" shirt. This was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Bulgarian Football Union. Gruev received his first call-up for the senior national team on September 5, 2022, for the games of the UEFA Nations League against Gibraltar and North Macedonia. He made his debut in the 5:1 victtory over Gibraltar on 23 September.
