Squadra Azzurra, the reigning world champions at the time, did not advance to the knockout stage after conceding a defeat and two draws in the group stage. Italy played all their matches in blue shirt. Legendary Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio spent his entire career in Turin, where he made 294 appearances, scoring 33 goals. He won seven Serie A titles with Juve. At the international level, Marchisio has represented Italy at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and at the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups. He also took part at UEFA Euro 2012, winning a runners-up medal, and at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, where he won a third-place medal. In total, he made 55 appearances for Italy at senior level between 2009 and 2017, scoring five goals.
