The left back was in the starting line up and remained on the field full 90 minutes. Les Blues performance throughout the tournament was disappointing and they finished bottom of their group, winning just one point and conceding two losses, to Italy and the Netherlands. Abidal spent most of his career playing with Lyon and Barcelona, with whom he won a total of 18 trophies, including 2x Champions League with the Catalans. On 15 March 2011, Barcelona announced that Abidal had been diagnosed with a tumour in his liver, and the player underwent surgery two days later. On 15 March 2012, it was announced that Abidal would have to undergo a liver transplant because of problems which were unresolved with the previous operation. On 6 April 2013, he returned to official play, replacing Gerard Piqué for the last 20 minutes of a 5:0 home win against RCD Mallorca. Abidal earned 67 caps for the France national team where he won a silver medal.
