Republic of Ireland shirt issued to Darron Gibson for the 2012 European Championship clash against Italy. Game played in Poznan on June 18 ended with a 2:0 win for Squadra Azzurra. The Northern Ireland-born midfielder Darren Gibson remained an unused substitute for the game. Shirt was acquired from the personal collection of an Italian official at the time. Eire finished bottom of their group after conceding 3 defeats, against Croatia, Italy and Spain. Gibson did not make any appearance throughout the tournament and was capped 27 times for Republic of Ireland in the period 2007-2016. The midfielder, who was part of Manchester United's championship squad for the 2010/2011 season, was at the centre of a dispute between the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) and the Irish Football Association (IFA), after he opted to play for the Republic of Ireland instead of Northern Ireland. The issue was referred to FIFA and was discussed in the Northern Ireland Assembly. It was settled in 2010 when it was declared that Northern Ireland-born people are entitled to play for either the Republic or Northern Ireland.
