The former captain of the national team earned 90 caps for his country in the period 2007 - 2019, scoring 18 goals. Popov is three times winner of the Bulgarian Footballer of the Year award (2015, 2016, 2017). He has won both the Bulgarian and the Russian League titles with Litex Lovech and Spartak Moscow, respectively.
