At the beginning of 1996, the reigning world champions Brasil were preparing to adorn themselves with the Olympic gold in Atlanta. An award that, oddly enough, would elude the "Seleção" for more than half a century, until the home Olympics in Rio in 2014. Mario Zagallo called for the tournament Ronaldo, Bebeto, Rivaldo and Roberto Carlos. A stellar selection! In preparation for the Olympics, Brasil scheduled to play a friendly game against the Olympic team of Bulgaria. For unknown reasons, however, instead of Bulgaria team it was Slavia Sofia's team that flew to Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilians were not informed of this strange decision. The Bulgarian national team (Slavia's team) were welcomed and greeted by numerous fans and journalists at the airport in Rio de Janeiro. After all, Bulgaria is the current bronze medalist of the last World Cup and an underdog story to remember. The media is surprised why our team is not led by Dimitar Penev and is disappointed that only one of the heroes of the World Cup in the USA is part of the team - Nasko Sirakov (who played for Slavia Sofia at the time). To make this whole story as comical as possible, Mario Zagallo and Stoyan Kotsev (Slavia's coach) gave a joint press conference, where Slavia is dressed in Bulgarian jerseys. It was this particular model which the national team wore only twice, in the home match against Wales and in the away match against Moldova in the Euro'96 qualifiers. One of the strangest and rarest kits of our national team is now also going to be worn in such an absurd match. The Olympic team of Brazil goes out against Slavia in front of 50,000 spectators at the Mane Garrincha stadium and defeats them 3:0. The jersey in our collection comes from an official at the Brazilian Football Federation and was acquired after the end of the match in a swap.
