Bulgaria shirt issued to Lyuboslav Penev for the 1998 FIFA World Cup group stage clash against Paraguay. Game played in Montpelier on June 15. Penev was in the starting line up but was later on substituted for Emil Kostadinov. The reigning World Cup bronze medalists from USA 94 failed to advance to the knockout stage after finishing bottom of Group D. Bulgaria drew 0:0 in their opener to Paraguay and that was the only point they earned at the tournament. Emil Kostadinov scored the only goal for Bulgaria at the 1998 FIFA World Cup Finals in the disastrous 6:1 loss to Spain. Lyuboslav Penev earned 62 caps for the national team, scoring 14 goals. Penev represented Bulgaria also at the 1996 European Championship in England. The striker is two times champion of Bulgaria with CSKA Sofia (1987, 1989) and has won the Primera division with Atletico Madrid in 1996. He was voted Bulgarian Footballer of the Year in 1988.
