On April 29, 1997, Team Bulgaria visited Germany for an odd International friendly game against VfB Stuttgart, whose biggest star at the time was legendary midfielder maestro Krasimir Balakov. The Schwabian side played mainly with their reserves, however, some star players such as Guido Buchwald and Giovanni Elber each played for 45 minutes. VfB Stuttgart's head coach at the time was the future world champion with Die Mannschaft, Joachim Löw. Bulgaria won 3:2, and one of the goals for the "Lions" was scored by Balakov. The other two goals for the Bulgarians were scored by Kostadinov and Ivanov, while the goals for VfB Stuttgart were netted by Djordjevic and Maric. Bala gifted these customized VfB Stuttgart jerseys to each of his team mates at the national team, each with number 10 printing on the back, Balakov's name and the name of the respective Bulgarian International player. In our collection, we keep the jersey that Balakov prepared and gifted to Anatoly Nankov. The midfielder is a former footballer of Dunav (Ruse), Akademik (Svishtov), CSKA, Slavia, Lokomotiv (Sofia), Spartak (Varna), the Chinese Chengdu and the Polish Katowice. His most notable stay was in the ranks of CSKA Sofia where he went on to make 200 appearances over 7 seasons, scoring 19 goals. Nankov is two-times Bulgarian champion (1992, 1997) and two-time winner of the Bulgarian League Cup (1993, 1997).
