Popov played full 90 minutes and shirt was personally gifted by the player. The goalkeeper went on to make 29 appearances for Levski Sofia in the period 1988 - 1992. In his career Popov played also for Botev Plovdiv, Spartak Plovdiv, CSKA Sofia, Maritsa Plovdiv, Lokomotiv Sofia, Spartak Varna and El Paso Patriots in the USA. Popov earned 14 caps for the Bulgaria national football team in the period 1993 - 1996 and was part of the squad at the 1996 European championship in England.
