The reigning World Cup bronze medalists from USA 94 failed to advance to the knockout stage after finishing bottom of Group D. Bulgaria drew 0:0 in the opener to Paraguay to win their only point at the tournament. Emil Kostadinov scored the only goal for Bulgaria in the disastrous 6:1 loss to Spain. Yordanov was capped 51 times for the national team, including seven FIFA World Cup games at the 1994 and 1998 championships. Bronze medalist from the 1994 World Cup, he was also part of the squad at the Euro'96 in England.
