Italy shirt issued to Alessandro Del Piero for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Finals in Korea and Japan. Shirt was gifted by Angelo Di Livio to a famous Italian journalist and comes from his personal collection. Squadra Azzurra faced hard times in a group with Mexico, Ecuador and Croatia, recording a draw, a win and a loss. In the Round of 16, however, the Italians met the host South Korea, and the world witnessed one of the most scandalous matches in the recent history of the World Cup. Ecuadorian referee Byron Moreno was at the center of events, awarding a controversial penalty to South Korea in the first half and later disallowing a potential "golden goal" by Damiano Tomasi for offside, while also showing Francesco Totti a second yellow card for a potential dive in the penalty area of the Koreans. Years later, Moreno himself admitted that he accepted payments from illegal betting companies to officiate certain situations at the World Cup in a certain way. In 2010, he was arrested at the New York airport for trying to smuggle 6 kilograms of drugs. A true legend of Juventus and the Italian football - Alessandro Del Piero, made appearance in all four matches for the Squadra except in the 1:2 loss to Croatia. Del Piero scored 27 goals in 97 matches for Italy between 1995 and 2007. He is a World champion from 2006 and hold a silver medal from the 2000 European Championship. Del Piero spent his entire career playing at his beloved Juventus, to which he remained loyal even after the "Calciopoli" scandal broke out which led to Juventus's removal from the elite of Italian football. Del Piero recorded 19 seasons for the giant from Turin (478 games and 188 goals). The Juventus captain is a six-time Serie A champion and has also won the 1996 UEFA Champions League.
