The defender earned 47 caps for his country in the period 1981 - 1987 and was part of the squad at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. Petrov played in all games for "the lions" except for the opener against Italy. He won the Bulgarian League title with Levski Sofia on 3 occasions (1984, 1985, 1988) adding to his record the League Cup in 1984.
