Bulgaria shirt worn by Tsanko Tsvetanov in the greatest football match in the history of the Bulgarian national team – the quarter-final against Germany at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. On 10 July, at Giants Stadium, the “Lions” produced a famous comeback against the reigning world champions. Goals from Hristo Stoichkov, who scored from a free kick in the 76th minute, and Yordan Letchkov, who headed home in the 79th minute, gave Bulgaria a memorable 2–1 victory and sent them through to the semi-finals of the 1994 World Cup. Tsanko Tsvetanov started the match and played the full 90 minutes. After the game, he exchanged shirts with Thomas Berthold, from whose personal collection this priceless shirt was acquired and brought back to Bulgaria. Tsanko Tsvetanov was one of the key defenders of Bulgaria’s legendary generation of the 1990s and a bronze medallist at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. At the tournament, he played in six of Bulgaria’s seven matches – starting against Nigeria (0–3), Greece (4–0), Argentina (2–0), Germany (2–1), Italy (1–2) and Sweden (0–4). The only match he missed was the Round of 16 against Mexico, which Bulgaria won on penalties. He was unavailable due to the red card he received in the match against Argentina. Tsvetanov made 40 appearances and scored 1 goal for the Bulgarian national team between 1991 and 1998. In addition to the 1994 World Cup, he also represented Bulgaria at UEFA Euro 1996, where he played in all three of Bulgaria’s matches. At club level, he won his first Bulgarian league title with Etar Veliko Tarnovo in 1991. With Levski Sofia, he became Bulgarian champion three times – in 1994, 1995 and 2002 – and won the Bulgarian Cup in 1994 and 2002. After his successful years in Bulgaria, he also played for Waldhof Mannheim, Aberdeen and Energie Cottbus, with whom he spent a season in the German Bundesliga.
