Bulgaria shirt worn in the early 1970s by the legendary Dobromir Zhechev. Nicknamed "Bobata", the former International defender remains the only Bulgarian footballer to have participated in four FIFA World Cups—1962, 1966, 1970, and 1974. To this day, he is also remembered as one of the very few defenders in world football who managed to hold his own in an individual duel against the "King of Football," Pelé. This came during Bulgaria's 0–2 defeat to Brazil at the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England. Wearing the Bulgarian national team shirt, emblazoned with the lion on the crest, Zhechev earned 73 international caps and scored 2 goals, the first of which came in Bulgaria's 1–1 draw against Morocco at the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. At club level, Zhechev spent his entire career with only two Sofia clubs—Spartak Sofia and Levski Sofia. He made his top-flight debut for Spartak in 1958, going on to make 216 appearances and score 7 goals in the Bulgarian "A" Group. Following the merger of Spartak and Levski on 22 January 1969, he became a Levski player. Until retiring in the summer of 1974, Bobata made 193 appearances and scored 16 goals for Levski in all competitions. Overall, in the Bulgarian top division, Dobromir Zhechev recorded 369 league appearances and 19 goals. With Spartak Sofia, the defender won the first major trophy of his career—the Bulgarian Cup in 1968. In the final, Spartak defeated the formidable Beroe side 3–2 after extra time, with Beroe's attack led by the legendary Petar Zhekov and Petko Petkov. During his time at Levski Sofia, Bobata won the Bulgarian league title twice (1970 and 1974) and lifted the Bulgarian Cup twice (1970 and 1971). While playing for the "Blues," he also finished runner-up twice in the Bulgarian Footballer of the Year award—first in 1970, behind Stefan Aladzhov, and again in 1973, behind Hristo Bonev.
